Waking Up To Well-Being with Mindfulness. Presentation for the Pumpers Club–for people with diabetes insulin pumps. Wilmington Health. February 4, 2015. 6pm. Free.  Living with a chronic illness is stressful, and stress is known to worsen the symptoms of some illnesses, including diabetes. Research shows that mindfulness is an effective intervention for reducing stress, anxiety, depression and HbA(1c) levels in people with diabetes. Learn about stress, its symptoms and its effect on the body as well as mindfulness techniques for effectively reducing stress. People who practice mindfulness report a greater sense of peace, happiness and well-being.

Women’s Mindful Self-Care Coaching Group in Wilmington, NC. This mindfulness-based coaching group will meet monthly to support and encourage healthy ways to practice self-care. We will meet at Jen’s office on the 2nd Wednesday of each month from 6:30 -8pm for 3 months. This group is designed to support you in committing to treating yourself with greater love and self-care so that you can be who you really want to be in the world. This group is limited to 10 participants. We will meet once monthly, on the 2nd Wednesday evening of the month during February, March, and April from 6:30pm – 8:00pm at Jen’s office in downtown Wilmington, NC. Each meeting will include a brief talk on the topic, writing exercises, meditations to support your progress, and opportunity to receive coaching from Jen in the group regarding your specific concerns.

The topics for each month are as follows:
February 11: Take Charge of Your Time: Creating an Absolute Yes List
Are you tired of saying, “Yes” when you really mean, “No”? Learn the secret formula that will allow you to easily decide whether you say yes or no to opportunities and invitations in your life. Become skilled at wisdom and discernment, and decide what you want to say yes to and what you want to say no to so that you feel more in charge of your time and your life. Learn how to make certain that your choices reflect your authentic self.

March 11: Being at Home: Creating Soulful Space Inside and Out
Who is it that you want to be in the world? Do you feel at home—in your body, heart, and mind? Do you feel at home in your physical environment, and does your home reflect who you are? Learn how to create soulful space in your body, heart, mind and physical surroundings by clearing the physical and emotional clutter and creating space for welcoming in more of what you really want in your life.

April 8: Committing to Self-Care: Creating Rhythms and Routine
As human beings, we resonate with rhythms and routines. Having a rhythm and routine for practices and habits that matter most to us and that support our well-being help us to maintain extreme self-care. We’ll explore why and how stress keeps us imbalanced and uncommitted to our self-care and why and how self-compassion supports self-care. Learn easy to practice mindfulness techniques, rhythms and routines that support activating and sustaining good self-care habits. Learn how to discern what matters most and how to make that a priority in your life.

Cost for the 3-month program is $150. If participants are interested in continuing after the 3-month initial commitment, we will continue to meet monthly and explore additional topics. Contact Jen to register.

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) teaches mindfulness meditation and gentle yoga to cultivate awareness and reduce stress. Participation in MBSR has been shown to decrease stress, increase peace and well-being, and decrease symptoms of anxiety and depression as well as symptoms of a number of medical conditions, including high blood pressure and heart disease, arthritis, cancer, gastrointestinal disorders, chronic pain, insomnia, and fatigue.MBSR was developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn in 1979 at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center and is taught at locations worldwide, including Stanford and Duke. MBSR was created on the foundation of the ancient practice of mindfulness, which encourages being fully present in our lives with greater peace and ease.  The class is a compliment to, not a substitute for, medical and psychological treatment.

Weekly Drop-In Mindfulness Meditation Class. Tuesdays 6pm – 7pm. $15
McKay Healing Arts | 4916 Wrightsville Ave.  Wilmington, NC

This weekly drop-in class provides instruction in the practice of mindfulness meditation. Mindfulness is awareness of the present moment without judgment. Practicing mindfulness allows you to stay in the present without getting lost in worry about the future or regret about the past. The practice allows you to relate more skillfully with difficult bodily sensations, feelings, and thoughts without becoming overwhelmed by them so that you can embrace your true nature, which is to be happy and at peace. Mindfulness meditation practice is compatible with all religious beliefs, and people from all faiths are welcome.

Each class includes a brief talk, meditation instruction, guided meditation, and time for questions. Classes will explore topics that include mindfulness, opening the heart, awakening to joy, embodied presence, loving-kindness, compassion, and forgiveness.
